RACHMANINOFF TOTAL

We’re bringing our 2024-25 concert season to a grand finish in another marathon undertaking together with the Dortmund Philharmonic, led by Gabriel Feltz – Chief Conductor of both orchestras.
Once again in Dortmund after the 2022 Beethoven marathon, on June 15 we will present all three symphonies and the first three piano concertos of Sergei Rachmaninoff. In this unique event, we will be joined by three outstanding soloists and known experts in Rachmaninoff’s music: Beatrice Berrut, Olga Scheps and Bernd Glemzer.
—
Hardly any other 20th-century composer remained as committed to the musical language of late Romanticism in his work as Sergei Rachmaninoff. With this approach, he created works that still speak directly to us today with their emotional intensity, melodic richness, and tangible drama.
The focal point of his work is the series of his piano concertos and symphonies. When Gabriel Feltz includes precisely these works on the program in his last three concerts as Generalmusikdirektor on a single day, it is possible to trace Rachmaninoff’s creative development in concentrated form. This reveals the enormous range of expressive worlds, ranging from euphoria, pathos, contemplation, sensitivity, to deep dejection, within which Rachmaninoff moved in his music.
With Rachmaninoff, Gabriel Feltz focuses on a composer who means a great deal to him. He is accompanied as soloists by pianists with whom he shares a special artistic partnership. As was the case at the Beethoven Marathon, on this Rachmaninoff Day, “his” Belgrade orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic, will once again be performing together with the Dortmund Philharmonic.
